שִׁטְפָא

שִׁטְפָא, שִׁי׳ch. sam( שֶׁטֶף m. (b. h.; preced. passion, anger), 1) flood, shower. Targ. Job 38:25. 2) rapidity, (cmp. שגר) rapid review in recalling a tradition. Sabb.130b דילמא אגב שִׁיטְפָךְ רהיטוכ׳ perhaps in the rapidity of reviewing, the tradition came back to thy mind?; אין אגב ש׳ רהיטאוכ׳ (Ms. M. שִׁיטְפָאִי v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note) yes, my tradition was recalled by the (my) rapid review; Nidd.53b אגב שטפך אתיא לך; אגב שטפאי אתיא לי. 3) rush of people. Y.Sabb.XIX, beg.16d כד תחמון ש׳ עברוכ׳ when you see the crowd pass by, bring them (the keys) by way of the row (the lines of men forming a partition for Sabbath purposes). 4) (sweeping away, cmp. נסח, נסע), discarding from the mind, forgetfulness.
